About Us

Scalloway Meat Co. Ltd endeavours to support local farmers by selling as much local produce as possible.  By doing this we are supporting the local community which in turn creates jobs and keeps money within the local economy.

Our History

Scalloway Meat Co. has been established since 1925.  There have been various owners over the years, in different locations along Main Street, Scalloway.  We moved into our current location in the early 1980s which was previously the premises of a knitwear factory.

In the 1980s a two-storey extension was built to the rear of the shop to house cold storage on the ground floor and extend our upstairs department on the first floor.  Various improvements have been made to the building over the years and we have also extended the range of facilities we offer to include a fully licensed grocer, the National Lottery and an ATM.

In 2016/17 we expanded into a building at the rear of the shop to create a dedicated processing plant which includes a freezer, a cutting room, large walk-in chill, an office and a purpose-built kitchen facility for all of our cooked products.

Our team have also increased over the years and we currently employ approximately 40 members of staff.

In the early 1900s the premises we currently occupy was a butcher with a grocer shop.  Over the years it has changed use numerous times and now in 2020 we have come full circle to what it was all those years ago.

Our Commitment to Quality

We take great pride in the butchery produce we are able to provide.  Meats are sourced locally where and when possible and we stock a wide variety of locally produced items in the grocer shop in addition.

Our recent purchase and renovation of the buildings behind our shop, at a cost of £250,000, has enabled us to provide a purpose-built cutting area, walk-in chill and kitchen - all refurbished with modern, up to date and top of the range equipment to ensure our produce is prepared to a high standard for our customers.
